For years, the only “bridge” between Ukrainian Yampil and Moldovan Cosăuţi was a view across the Dniester — the ferry stopped running here long ago, and the nearest detour took hours. People from the two banks, who for centuries traded, married and visited one another, were effectively cut off by the river. Now the first piers already stand above the water, and a third of the work is behind them.
For the border communities of Vinnytsia region, this is not just infrastructure news — it is a chance to regain lost logistics. For state contracting authorities and the construction industry, it is an example of how the “Great Construction” programme keeps moving even under the difficult conditions of war and budget constraints. And for the country as a whole, it is one more brick in integration with the European transport network.
The Yampil-Cosăuţi bridge in numbers
Facts confirmed by the Vinnytsia Regional State Administration and independent media:
- the length of the bridge crossing is 1,309 metres, with two traffic lanes and sidewalks on both sides
- construction began a few months ago, and roughly a third of the planned work has already been completed — piers and part of the steel structures have been installed
- the project is expected to be completed in October–November 2026
- the Avtostrada group of companies won the construction tender, according to Serhii Borzov, head of the Vinnytsia Regional Military Administration
- UAH 383.8 million has been allocated from the 2026 state budget reserve fund to build a temporary technological bridge needed to erect the main structure
- the project is part of the Strategy for the Development of Border Infrastructure with EU Countries and the Republic of Moldova until 2030, and part of the plan to integrate Ukrainian roads into the European TEN-T network
- a joint Ukrainian-Moldovan border checkpoint, located on Ukrainian territory, will be set up at the new crossing
- once opened, the route between Vinnytsia region and Moldova’s Soroca will be shortened by 28 kilometres
What the Yampil-Cosăuţi border crossing will change
What matters here is not the cubic metres of concrete, but the fact that the bridge is finally moving the Yampil-Cosăuţi border crossing out of the “promised for years” category and into “almost ready.” It is a direct Kyiv–Chișinău corridor bypassing long detours, a new channel for transit, trade and passenger traffic — and one more argument for businesses that see border communities as a growth point rather than a dead end.
What is especially notable: until recently, the project existed only on paper for years, held back by a lack of funding. The fact that piers are now standing in the Dniester, and the deadline has moved up to the end of 2026 instead of the previously stated 2027, is a signal that the state is capable not just of announcing border infrastructure reconstruction, but of carrying it through to concrete and steel.
